Hurricane Ike Update #21

Ok, so here's what I know about the area (sorry, no pictures, just what the residents have told me):

49th and Q--Several feet of water, so houses or apartments on the ground floor have been flooded. Houses on stilts or up some steps are ok.

Villa Marina (Ferry Road)--about 3+ feet of standing water was in the apartments on the first floor, with all furniture and belongings destroyed. The resident who lives here described it as looking like "everything just got swirled around." She has already applied for FEMA aid.

19th and Post-office--about 7 feet of standing water was also in these condos and apartments. The water was soaking into the walls and making a creepy gurgling noise! The strand area was still flooded as of yesterday afternoon, and there was also a huge house fire within the flooded area, which was unable to be extinguished for several hours.

Port Au Prince--second floor apartments were fine. Can't comment on the first floor apartments.

Sealy and 7th--no flooding on the first floor, but severe wind damage, with a broken window (and therefore lots of rain damage), screen door torn off, porch destroyed, debris covering the driveway).

12th and Market (me)--the water level was about 4-5 feet, so I can only imagine what happened for first floor apartments. The second floor, as we saw earlier, was ok.

That is honestly all I know about housing on the island. I will get more pictures of the island before I leave tomorrow, so stay tuned! :)

Hi, some news sources mentioned that an apartment around Holiday and Church St collapsed. Do you know which apartment collapsed exactly?

Thanks.

You have made this horrible chaos come alive for some many people. I know there are people who, literally, wait everyday to see what you say about Galveston, UTMB, and the crappy (literally) situation. You have done a great job. Altho I will be glad to have you home for a while, I think the blogging world will miss your honest, informative, yet creative, reports. Don't ya think you should stay just a bit longer to record this for posterity? No, huh!

Thanks so much for such honest information. My husband and I have family in Galveston (one member who actually works at UTMB!) and it's very nice to see your updates. Good luck and God bless to you!

Thank you Casey for posting the pictures! I own the house (duplex)across the street from your apartment with the for rent sign next to it (1113 market), and was desperately looking for pictures of this area to see if my place was still intact. I'm glad you are on the 2nd floor and safe as I am sure my lower unit is trashed!? Keep up the good work!!!!!

Casey Boyd--surgery resident, baker, ordained minister, and now....news reporter. You're going to have so much stuff to add to your CV!
Thanks for the updates. It's much more informative than the Dallas-based anchorwoman. I guess I'll see you in 2-4 weeks when we'll once again be taking care of the galveston county traumas. ;)
Call if you need anything or if there's any way I can help you out.

casey- this blog is amazing. I feel so closed off from the island and can only imagine what my apartment looks like. If you have any information about chateau lafitte - 4th and holiday drive across from walgreens i would be so happy. Thanks so much for the reporting and pictures - you are a godsend

Casey, thank you soo much for all the info. My parents are glad hear about the market area.

If you are driving North on I-45 and need a quick stop over. (shower, shop, whatever) I live in Corsicana and you are more than welcome here. Email me (babymains@hotmail.com)

My parents think they will have to move into Texas City to keep working. Their 1st floor apartment is probally soaked. My Mom works for Clear Creek Isd, so she has to come back to the area.

I am glad you are getting to leave! Have a safe trip and I will pray for your safe travel.

Casey,

Thanks so much for your running blog and pictures, as so many of us UTMB residents and Galveston locals have been starving for information about the island! I'm glad that people can see the situation through your words, plus the human side of the disaster that the media doesn't show. Have a safe trip back home!

Thanks for your updates! It's been a real help to all of us. You mentioned that you had a friend at the Villa Marina apartments on the Ferry Road side. Which building was this friend in?
